March’s Featured Park: Rancho Tapo Park
There are so many things to love about Rancho Tapo Park! Located in Simi Valley, in a neighborhood just past the Simi Valley library.
This multi-generational park has something for everyone. From playgrounds, to Bocce courts, to covered picnic areas (avail to reserve), to a splash pad (open summers), to an outdoor gym. And yes, Pickle Ball courts!
When we arrived at the park, we headed straight for the gorgeous fountain in the Veterans Plaza, to watch the geese and ducks. (We did try to feed them lettuce and it was a no-go - they quickly swam away like some of our children at the sight of something green! Perhaps grapes next time.) The sound of the fountain is so serene - a great place to relax, bring a picnic, and enjoy the nature around you.
This visit I actually remembered our Bocce ball set. Bocce is a game of two-to-four people who each have a set of colored balls. There is a small white ball called a pallino which is tossed at the start of each round. The goal is to toss/roll your ball closest to the pallino to receive points. This Bocce Set is currently on sale .
This was Sebastian’s first time playing and he loved it. The balls are a bit heavy, but he managed to get good tosses in. Though he did get distracted and wanted to balance beam on the side of the court from time-to-time! The courts aren’t really shaded so keep in mind, even on this mild February afternoon, we worked up a sweat.
Before heading out, we of course had to visit the playground. The structures aren’t as large as they are at other parks, but there are three of them and a set of swing. Note, the ground is mulch, so watch the mouthing babes, and the playground backs to a parking lot with no gate.
By the playground is a large covered picnic area, where Sebastian and I painted pumpkins last October with his playgroup. This is one of two in the park, and they can be reserved for parties. To the left of the picnic area are bathrooms which seem to be well-maintained and clean.
My husband Vinny commented that this is probably the best park he’s been to yet, and I definitely agree. It will be one we visit often as a family.
